Inferno Sonata

The Dare

To design a portable set for a theatrical production, based on the life of playwright August Strindberg. The one-man show required set pieces to double as other characters, then assemble into a complex alchemical apparatus.

  • A single actor had to operate all sets and props with significantly bandaged hands
  • High demands for concept, portability and durability, as the show was touring across Canada

The Outcome

The highly interactive and transformative set was designed and built entirely in the Double Dare Design Workshop. The show travelled to five venues across the country, and received rave reviews and notoriety in every city it was performed in.

"For our five-city Fringe tour, Double Dare delivered a collection of custom-made, modular set pieces that, when assembled, filled the stage with steampunk fever-dream optical illusions based on ancient alchemical apparati... and, when disassembled, fit snugly into the back of a Honda Civic hatchback."
